Tourism | DQ & TNZ | Winter & Summer For many yea Tourism | DQ & TNZ | Winter & Summer For many years I have shot for and contribute to a lot of the outgoing tourism media that’s used to promote Queenstown, New Zealand and winter in general. Some times the location is easy to get to and sunny and warm, some times it is the complete opposite. We are blessed with a surprising amount of geographic variation in the small area surrounding Queenstown. Whether it’s endless snow capped mountains and glaciers, lakes, rivers, rain forests, desert, fiords and beaches, we have it all. Wildlife Documentary | Kaikoura aftermath For Asah Wildlife Documentary | Kaikoura aftermath For Asahi Tv, Japan It takes a long time for an ecosystem to recover from an event such as a large earthquake, much longer than I expected. One of the more noticeable characteristics of the rock pools in Kaikoura was all of the silt which is still present from the 2016 earthquake. While a lot of the species remain, many of the building blocks seemed to have vanished. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time, and there’s nothing we can really do about it, but it’s interesting all the same. Wildlife Documentary | Birds of Milford For Asahi Wildlife Documentary | Birds of Milford For Asahi Tv, Japan I spent a lot of time by myself in the rain among the sandflies talking to the birds in Fiordland, New Zealand. Thanks to my friend the Black Teal or Pāpongo, they enjoyed watching me get attacked by sandflies. The Whio or Blue Duck, they like fast flowing mountain rivers and again watching me struggle with sandflies. Wildlife Documentary | Stewart Island magic In th Wildlife Documentary | Stewart Island magic In the Paterson Inlet at Stewart Island a gang of birds of various native species would lap the small island every 30-40 minutes. It’s comparable to a group of friends riding bikes, skis or snowboards one after the other through a jump park aka a train. Among the gang was …. The New Zealand kākā which is a large species of parrot of the family In New Zealand native forests. These guys are incredibly smart, but unlike their Kea cousins they’re didn’t seem to be as curious or cheeky., they were actually kinda hard to capture. The kererū or New Zealand pigeon is a species of pigeon native to New Zealand. The kererū is a large bird and they were swooping down just over my head seemingly in control, but questionable at times. The South Island robin also known in Maori as the kakaruwai is a sparrow-sized bird found only in New Zealand. They always came to check out what I was up to and in some cases they flutter or hopped between all of my gear. After many days of isolation in some of the forests I found myself talking to them constantly as if they were talking back. I was that crazy person. These moments come from over 16 hours of my edited wildlife imagery. The project being a wildlife documentary for Asahi TV Japan which was filmed over the space of last year. I was given the opportunity to document the South Island and in that year only scratched the surface of it vast infinite beauty. Wildlife Documentary | Dawn glow As the sun rises Wildlife Documentary | Dawn glow As the sun rises in Kaikoura, New Zealand the wildlife springs in action. It is the best time to witness the local wildlife doing its thing. Kekeno (New Zealand fur seal) are the most common seals in New Zealand waters and Kaikoura is definitely one of the more populated locations. These little guys are crawling around everywhere. In one case I had to leave the location because the seal pups kept coming closer. These moments come from many hours of edited wildlife imagery captured last year. Wildlife Documentary | Dinner between Colleagues. Wildlife Documentary | Dinner between Colleagues. A White Heron and a Pied Shag have a meal together in Milford Sound. I’ve been fortunate enough to have spent the past year filming New Zealand Wildlife for a Japanese Wildlife documentary produce by Asahi TV Japan. I was given free rein to shoot all aspects of some of the South Island’s more notable locations. With my @reddigitalcinema V Raptor 8k camera and newly built @kesslercrane crane dolly system powered by @syrplab genies, @djiglobal djirs3pro and shooting on @dzofilm Vespid prime lenses I was able to shoot ultra smooth, sometimes complicated multi axis establishing shots for each location and eco systems. While there is very little movement in this clip, my following posts will share some of my favourite moments and some of those dynamic establishers. This was by far the most enjoyable work experience I have ever been a part of. I love filming wildlife and would happily continue to do so for the remainder of my career. It didn’t quiet work out how we wanted it to, due to serious injury of one of our members, but these memories are the best. With over a million views on YouTube alone it was all well worth it.
